FAQ

{ APPLICATION }

What kinds of characters are applicable?
The Dark Fields accepts canon characters from all forms of media, canon AUs, CRAUs, OCs, fandom OCs (without ties to the main cast), malleable protagonists, and fictionalized versions of real people provided there is enough established canon to form a distinct personality.

My character does not look human. What do I do?
They will be human and believe they always have been human. If you do not want your character to become human, they can keep their original form if they can pass as something akin to a side-show attraction. This includes skin deformities (pointed ears, webbed toes/fingers, scales, fur, even discoloration. A character like Nightcrawler would be able to remain intact), and other physical attributes like unusual eye colors, tails, fangs, etc.

Is there a character limit?
Yes. Players are allowed up to four characters. Before applying for a new character, there must be either one post or a comment thread of at least ten comments with the most recently adopted character. Players are allowed no more than two characters from the same canon and those characters may not have close interactions.

Are duplicates allowed?
Yes. The Dark Fields will accept up to three versions of a character. For example, there could be Wanda Maximoff from the MCU, 616, and Ultimates.

Is there an age limit?
Yes. Characters must at least 16 years old. If they are close to the age, they may be aged up.

Can I app a character post-death?
Yes. They will not be aware that they died in their canon.

How are new canons handled?
We require a one-month waiting period from the release of a new canon before a character from it can be apped.

What about my character's canon powers and abilities?
If your character canonically has special powers, they will not be able to use them here at first. Your character will not be aware of their abilities, and therefore will not be able to use them unless they find themselves under extreme duress. If your character has passive abilities (such as healing factor), they will not be aware of it.

{ PREMISE & SETTING }

What is the premise?
Your character is brought to Columbia City, a fictional analogue of Depression-era New York City. The city is filled with corruption from the highest echelons of the local government to the media spinning the news to the police with boots on the ground. But not everything is bad. Anything a person could want can be found in Columbia City, be it simple or sinful, if you just know where to look. Your character may or may not be aware of the dangers of the city or maybe they are part of those dangers. Whatever the case, your character believes they have always been in this setting.

Okay, but what's really going on?
What's really going on here? Your character might not realize anything is wrong yet, but there's obviously more to what's going on than they think. They have been brought here by means of magic and had their memories altered, but whose magic was it? And why do they want your character here?

These are all mysteries that are there for your character to investigate. Just dig deeper into the secrets of Columbia City. Look beneath what's beneath the surface as not everything is what it seems. NPCs will be around to help characters; give them jobs or help lead you to answers. But some may be out to hinder and lead your character astray so be careful who they decide to trust. If you want your character to recover their memories and get back home, that is.

Who knows, some may be happier this way.

Why must I re-write my character's memories?
They will get their memories back, eventually. Plot mechanics aside, this is necessary to integrate your character into the setting. Characters will not realize (at first) that their memories have been altered. They can be altered as little or as much as you like. For example, you can simply make them period-appropriate or you can create a whole different life for them. Please be aware that this is not an excuse to deviate from your character's core personality.

What happens when my character arrives?
As far as they know, they have always been here. Or have recently arrived in Columbia City from far away places. Each character will wake up in their bed in their lodgings, be it a house, an apartment, or on the streets. Your character's situation in the city is completely up to you. They may have a passing feeling that something is wrong, but it passes quickly and the remnants of the dream they were having (of their real life) quickly fades from memory. They will find an anachronistic tablet with a stylus somewhere nearby with an engraving reading From your Good Friends. Outside of phone calls and HAM radio (which anyone can join in on), this is how you will connect to others in the city via the network. Again, this all seems completely normal.

I want to app a character who would've been persecuted in the 1930s. Will that be a problem?
No. We will not be enforcing such problematic historical issues as segregation and persecution of homosexuality game-wide. If they are struggles you want to include in your characterization, feel free (just let other players know before springing it on them).

What sort of places can my character explore?
A detailed list of businesses and locations can be found here. Exploration of the setting is highly encouraged!

What happens if my character breaks the law?
That wholly depends on the crime and who the crime effects. Many of the police are corrupts and may let certain crimes slide for bribes or favors. If your crime happens to catch the notice of the local mobsters, they may send someone to knock at your door. Maybe to recruit you, maybe not. If your character gets caught doing something shady, you may chose for them to do time in jail. You can choose if you still want to RP them from jail or take a mini-hiatus and take them out of play for a time.

{ GAME MECHANICS }

What is the pacing of the game?
The Dark Fields operates on a 1:1 ratio. One IC day is the same as one OOC day.

What are the activity requirements?
The first month's AC is simply joining the communities and replying to the taken list. After the first month, we require one post or one thread of at least ten comments every other month posted to the permanent AC post. If you are unable to make AC you may request a pass for the month. If it is found that players are making a habit of this, they will receive an official warning. If you fail AC two months in a row, you will be swept from the game.

What if I need to hiatus or drop?
Please use the hiatus and drop posts to notify us. Hiatuses of two consecutive weeks or longer will be exempt from that month's AC. If you are exempt, please link to your hiatus post on the AC page. Players dropping are asked to take the appropriate steps in exiting the game properly so that they may leave in good standing and return at a later date if they so wish.

How do I canon update?
Please go to the canon update post and fill out the attached form for approval. Once the mods have approved the update, you may immediately update your character.

What about character deaths?
Unless you are dropping and that your mechanism for leaving the game death is not permanent. Characters will be believed to have been on the verge of death and miraculously survived. However, characters do not know that they are impervious to death and should act accordingly. If there are witnesses to a character's death, they may begin to wonder...

What about potentially triggering topics?
Please apply the appropriate content warnings either in your post or in the subject line of a thread if it comes up later. This holds for topics such as graphic violence, sexual content, death, self-injury/suicide, abuse, rape, incest, etc.

So sex is allowed?
Yes it is. Please make sure anything NSFW is labeled as such.

You say "three versions of a character" under duplicates. What about in-canon duplicates? Like, say, the main MCU Loki and Jotun Loki from the What If episode? How much difference would you need to be between them?
